A momentous time in history
The Caravels Dock
A detailed historical reconstruction of the society, surroundings and circumstances that led up to
Christopher Columbus' voyage forms the star attraction of this complex. An audio-visual hall seating 120 puts
on an excellent show which recreates with great realism the three ships' voyage to America.
The tour continues with an exhibition about the 15th Century in Spain. Period documents, navigation
instruments, articles made of pottery and wood, weaponry, engravings, costumes ... all serve to give the
visitor the genuine feel of that great epoch. Next comes the star attraction of the tour, at the dock: a large
basin in which are moored life-size replicas of the three ships, which one can board, and whose decks, holds,
cabins ... perfectly represent those of the period.
The journey back in time finishes at the 15th Century Quay, which displays all the features that made up the
ports of the period. Inns, market stalls, carts ... the tour is fascinating, educational and great
entertainment for all ages.
José Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden
Most visitors to the Caravels Dock tack onto their tour a visit to the José Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden
- a large growing area planted with a spectacular variety of species from five continents.
Planned to make the most of the natural contours of the terrain, the site is an immense garden where the use
of water is a major feature. Tranquil lakes and rivers, and the soothing murmur of small waterfalls and fountains,
enhance the beauty of the exotic plants, and make the place a delight to walk around.
The Garden is divided up into different areas, each planted with species adapted to it. The shores of the Lake,
for example, are planted with diverse aquatic species - some autochthonous, and others introduced to the area.
Another interesting feature of the Garden is the various "Squares" situated along the footpaths, each one
dedicated to a different American country and planted with its representative flora.
One of the Garden's most spectacular features is the colour-filled and exuberant Vale of America, which recreates
typical landscapes of that continent.
Other sections of the Garden are dedicated to Asia, Africa and Oceania, to fruit trees and to a heavenly-scented
Aromatic Plants Walk.
To round off your visit we recommend you walk around one of the Park's most impressive features: the large
Greenhouse, sheltering an exotic tropical jungle, with some of the most spectacular plants on the entire site.
