Condado Wine Growing Region

El Condado de Huelva (whose name means "The County of Huelva") is in the South East of the province, in the Guadalquivir Valley, and its land is bounded by the El Andévalo region to the North-North West; by the province of Seville to the East – with the River Guadiamar serving as a “natural boundary”; by the River Tinto near its mouth and the capital to the West; and by the lands belonging to Moguer and Almonte – which extend all the way to the coast – to the South.

Did you know...

...most of the (vine) stocks that exist in America came originally from El Condado?

The El Condado region includes 17 municipalities – Beas, Bollullos Par del Condado, Bonares, Chucena, Escacena del Campo, Gibraleón, Hinojos, Lucena del Puerto, Manzanilla, Niebla, La Palma del Condado, Paterna del Campo, Rociana del Condado, San Juan del Puerto, Trigueros, Villalba del Alcor and Villarrasa – with a combined population of 93,981 (2007) – which represents 18.88% of the total for the province as a whole – although, for the purposes of the area's wine-making tradition, Almonte and Moguer are included in this list, with their combined population of 133,088 (2007) – that's 26.74% of the total for the province. The Brand of Origin "Condado de Huelva" and "Condado de Huelva Wine Vinegar" cover the above-named municipalities – except for Escacena – and include Palos de la Frontera.

The region's means of livelihood have mainly reflected its rural nature (the growing of cereals, olives, grapes, and strawberries along with other red berries), although thanks to wine, El Condado has also developed as something of a trading centre. Amongst the region's traditional products can be found, along with wine, Flamenco craft products – wineskin bottles, hats, flutes, drums, carriages...; decorative textiles featuring embroidery, crochet, cross stitch and bobbin lace; embroidered shawls; candles, kegs (many of which are exported and used for Scotch malt whisky) and pottery or basketwork articles.
