In Huelva there is also one of the areas of greatest mycological (fungal) wealth in Spain. This is the Sierra de Aracena and Peaks of Aroche Nature Park, situated in
the North of the province, in Sierra Morena, and occupying over 185,000 hectares which fall within 28 municipalities. The vegetation in the area includes sweet
chestnut trees, holm oaks, cork oaks, gall oaks, rockrose, mastic trees, kermes oaks, turpentine trees, sarsaparilla trees, black pines, stone pines, oaks, willows,
alders and ash trees, amongst other species. And with regard to the fauna one can find otters, wild cats, genets, weasels, martens, badgers, ichneumons, foxes, wild
boars, red deer, black storks, golden eagles, short-toed eagles, goshawks, falcons, black kites, red kites, black vultures, kestrels and Eurasian eagle-owls. Iberian
lynxes have also been sighted in the area.
Andalusia is the area with the greatest diversity of mushrooms and truffles in Europe (over 3,800 species have been counted), especially the North Sierra of Seville
and this area. From October to February people gather brown mushrooms (Amanita ponderosa), Caesar's mushrooms (Amanita cesarea) and saffron milk-caps (Lactarius
deliciosus). Apart from that, other activities are carried out such as arable farming; livestock farming – the greatest exponents of which are the free-range Iberian
pigs reared in the meadows; mining; and the cork industry. And so you can get to know it, the Park has over 700 kilometres of footpaths.
