Although little more than four kilometres long -the same as the built-up area of Matalascañas- this beach offers some interesting remains, those
of the Torre de la Higuera (Fig Tree Tower). This tower was part of an early-warning network in the days of the Barbary pirates' attacks; an
earthquake in 1755 sent it plunging into the sea. Fine golden sand and the waters of the Atlantic which, here, are calm, are two attractions of
this part of Huelva's coastline, as are the many restaurants and beach-hut cafés along the promenade. This little enclave, situated in the
south-east of the province and next to Doñana Park, has the largest number of hotel beds in all the province. It's frequented by holiday-making
families, both Spanish and foreign, and has a high occupancy rate in July and August, especially at weekends.
