Punta Umbría is a tongue of land which extends into the sea, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ría (the Estuary). This situation means that
this locality possesses beaches of divers types and characteristics (not for nothing did the British choose it as a beach resort in the 19th
century). One of the most extensive ones is Punta Umbría town beach which, in turn, is divided into different areas strung out along the
coastline: Punta Mar, Everluz, Altair, Las Tres Marías, Terramar and La Canaleta. Punta Mar is the area where you enter the town, adjacent to
the Los Enebrales (Juniper Trees) Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and beach. Its occupancy rate is lower than elsewhere, although the
characteristics are similar (average width of the beach, conditions for bathing, amenities...) to the other beaches. In the case of La Canaleta,
situated at the tip of the tongue of sand, next to the breakwater, things change, because the beach gains in width.
Frequented by Spanish holiday-making families, with each passing year it wins over more foreign converts. Some of the sports practised there are
windsurfing, kite surfing, and dinghy sailing in Optimists.
